How to play by ear

start with easy songs, like a famous classical melody u have heard but not studied the actual music.  Then identify whether it is major or minor.   Then pick a key and try to identify the relative pitch.  Most people who cannot play by ear make the mistake of trying to identify the absolute pitch.  They fail because they are skipping the relative pitch step.

Identifying the key narrows the possibilities considerably.  There are 12 chromatic steps but if you identify they key u have narrow the possibilities to 7, excluding accidentals.

Davies Symphony Hall Program 2009 - program to be ~2 hours

Bach-Busoni Chaconne in D minor 15:03

  1. Beethoven Appasionata
  2. Liszt 1 - la campanella
  3. Mozart Rondeau
  4. Liszt 2 - mazeppe (replace with Beethoven presto agitato?)
  5. Liszt 3- Alla Turca Capriccio -
  6. Chopin Ballade No. 4 - 10 minutes -
  7. Chopin Etudes -
    1. first one -
    2. winter etude - needs polishing - lacking sophistcation on runs.
    3. Revolutionary Etude

7. Scarlatti Sonatas -3 - E, D, and mordent. totally learnable, but now ask the tough questions on how to make the tone sound even better. Dont' start with just the piano, ask yourself the ideal tone in piano.

8. Beethoven Allegro Vivace - Rondo

9. Scriabin Prelude -

Performing notes:

E is sharped.
Right hand comes in on offbeat.
4 against three; unusual rhtyhm.

Double LH octave repeated. To get maximum efficiency keep alternating between songs and ask the tough questions. keep the pencil moving. There is a pattern in the LH.

Piece is mysteriously loud, but difficult because the intervals are larger than your hands.

Ossia - A word used in musical scores – as also, more rarely, oppure (particularly in Verdi), overo or ovvero (literally ‘or rather’) – to mark an alternative to a passage. This occurs in several different circumstances: (i) simpler versions, particularly in 19th-century piano music; (ii) embellished versions, particularly in bel canto vocal music; (iii) in scholarly texts, readings from other sources or alternative interpretations of the same source; (iv) changes made to accommodate the music to an instrument with a slightly shorter range, whether a piano with a smaller keyboard or an oboe, for instance, playing violin music; (v) alternative orchestration for an orchestra smaller or larger than that originally intended.

Reflective activity
Looking inside yourself
How do I want to hear this
What am I trying to say
Who is saying it to me?

Strong narrative inside – something that expresses what you feel inside
What does this music mean to you?

Beta blockers - Class of pharmacological agents that block beta adrenoceptors, acting as beta antagonists, preventing adrenaline and noradrenaline from exerting their beta receptor mediated effects. Beta blockers are used clinically to treat a variety of conditions, including cardiac arrhythmias, glaucoma, high blood pressure, and angina. Because of the drug's ability to reduce anxiety and muscle tremor, beta blockers can enhance performance in certain sports

In many cases, the amount in controversy does not justify the cost of briefing or even the cost of preparing for and attending a mediation session.  In those cases, the First District’s Mediation Program suggests a confidential double blind process conducted by the Mediation Program Administrator by telephone or
E-mail, as follows:

  1. The administrator asks each party to give a realistic settlement figure, with a brief supporting argument, in confidence.  The figure must be close to what the party is willing to settle for, because the administrator will not go back and forth as in an in-person mediation.  It is a one-shot process.
  2. If the parties’ confidential settlement figures are close enough, the administrator will consider the likelihood that the appeal will be successful or unsuccessful.  The administrator will send each counsel a confidential letter with that assessment, including the underlying reasons, with a settlement recommendation.
  3. If all parties accept the recommendation, the case is settled.  If not, there may be an in-person mediation or the appeal may proceed toward decision by the court.  However, because no party’s settlement figure is known to the other party or parties, negotiation positions are not compromised.
